A new UK law came into effect in July 2016 criminalising forced marriages. As expert solicitors in this area we can provide immediate assistance if you or some one you know is being forced into a marriage.

A forced marriage is where one or both people do not (or in cases of people with learning disabilities, cannot) consent to the marriage, and pressure or abuse is used. The pressure put on people to marry against their will can be physical (including threats, actual physical violence and sexual violence), emotional and/ or psychological. Financial abuse can also be a factor. The Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Act 2007 allows courts to make a Forced Marriage Protection Order (FMPO) to protect someone who is being forced into marriage or who has already been forced into marriage.

Forced marriages are not the same as arranged marriages. In arranged marriages, families will match couples, but the couple has a choice about whether or not to proceed.
